What is a worm gear motor
Worm gear motor is a structure combining a high speed motor and a worm gearbox.
The high speed motor adopts a DC motor or an AC motor, which is the power source of the worm gear motor. The high-speed motor drives the spiral worm gear on the shaft to rotate, the worm gear engages with the turbine, and finally the turbine and other gears transfer the power to the output shaft of the gearbox.
The number of helixes in the worm gear, and the number of teeth in the turbine and other gears exist in a proportional relationship, and ultimately turn the high speed of the worm gear into a low speed to provide torque. The speed is reduced and the torque is increased in response to meet the needs of different load applications.

Worm gear motor vs. geared motor :
Transmission Ratio
Worm gear motor: large transmission ratio, single-stage transmission ratio is usually between 10-80, or even higher, under some special design, the transmission ratio can reach more than 100, and can realize larger reduction ratio with smaller volume.
Ordinary geared motors: a wide range of ratios, but the ratio of a single-stage gear reducer is usually between 3-10, and the single-stage ratio of a planetary gear reducer is usually around 3-10. If a larger ratio is needed, a multi-stage combination is often required, which will make the structure relatively complex.
Transmission efficiency
Gear worm motor: the transmission efficiency is low, generally between 0.7-0.85, especially in the case of large ratios, the efficiency may be even lower, this is because the relative sliding speed between the tooth surfaces of the worm gear transmission is larger, the friction loss is larger.
Ordinary geared motors: the transmission efficiency is relatively high, the efficiency of gear reducer is generally between 0.9-0.98, and the efficiency of planetary gear reducer can also reach 0.9-0.97 or so, which can more effectively transfer the power of the motor to the output shaft and reduce the energy loss.
Self-locking performance
Worm gear motor: when the lead angle of the worm is smaller than the equivalent friction angle between the meshing gear teeth, it has good self-locking performance, i.e., only the worm can drive the worm wheel to rotate, and the worm wheel can not drive the worm to rotate, which is very useful in some occasions that need to prevent the reversal, such as lifting equipment, winches and so on.
Ordinary geared motors: Generally, ordinary geared motors do not have self-locking function, if you need to realize self-locking, you usually need to add extra brakes and other devices.
